COVID Works

These photo-based artworks were created during COVID lockdown years 2019 - 2021. I was struck by legacy that we were leaving our young people. ‘On Fire’ is a portrait my eldest son. The summer before the ridge above our house was on fire - the flames burnt right up to our back fence, I photographed my son in front of the burnt ridge at dusk with fire projected across his face, simulating the experience he had faced when his home was at risk. ‘On Strike’ speaks of his anger and sense of betrayal, when he marched with his friends pleading to the world to make changes towards zero emissions before it was too late.

During the fires, we were told that it was not safe to be at home. During COVID we were told it was not safe to leave our home. The Caravan Series, asks where is now safe and do we need mobile homes to be able to flee with the threats of the times.

The final body of work plays with projections, this time in a utopian dream of people returning to the bush and finding a balance with nature.
